Are you looking to Disable Gutenberg and keep the old editor in WordPress on your website? Gutenberg is a new editor that replaces the Classic Editor of WordPress. Although it looks modern, there are many users who find it difficult to use and go back to the old editor. In today’s article, I will show you how to disable Gutenberg easily and retain the Classic editor in WordPress.

What is Gutenberg?

As I said, Gutenberg is a new WordPress editor from version 5.0 with the goal of improving the writing experience on WordPress.

This tool acts as a page builder plugin and allows us to drag and drop items into posts or pages.

The goal of this tool is to increase flexibility and allow WordPress users to create unique layouts for their content with rich multimedia content.

Since WordPress 4.9.8, the WordPress team has called on people to try Gutenberg in the WordPress dashboard.

The purpose of this is to get feedback from millions of WordPress users and make Gutenberg more complete for the first release.

Gutenberg became the default WordPress editor in WordPress 5.0.

Why disable Gutenberg in WordPress?

Many users feel that the current version of Gutenberg does not really work as expected. This is evident with a rating of only 2.3 / 5 for the Gutenberg plugin.

At the time of writing, there are up to 1525 ratings and 429 ratings.

Despite the negative reviews, the WordPress development team continues to make Gutenberg the default editor in WordPress 5.0.

Doing this is annoying WordPress users. They want an option to disable Gutenberg and keep the old editor they are using.

Thankfully, we have a WordPress plugin that allows you to do this.

Let’s do it right away.

1. Disable Gutenberg with the Classic Editor plugin

In this method, I will use the Classic Editor plugin developed and maintained by the WordPress development team.

The first thing you need to do is install and activate the Classic Editor plugin. For more details, see my detailed guide on how to install WordPress plugins.

This plugin works very well and it will disable Gutenberg when activated.

Classic Editor also gives you an option to keep Gutenberg and Classic Editor together. We will easily set this option in plugin settings.

Just go to Settings » Writing in the WordPress admin area. You will see the option to set in “Classic editor settings”.

Don’t forget to click the save changes button to save the settings you just made.

Now you will see a new link in the Posts menu, click and this link to create a new post using Classic Editor.

You can also edit old posts using the Classic Editor. Just visit Posts » All Posts and you will see an” Edit (Classic) “link below the article.

2. Use Classic Editor with the Gutenberg Disable Plugin

If you want to disable Gutenberg with some user roles and post types then this is the method for you.

The first thing you need to do is install and activate the Disable Gutenberg plugin.

When enabled, you need to visit Settings » Disable Gutenberg to configure plugin settings.

By default, the plugin disables Gutenberg everywhere with all users on the website. However, if you only want to limit Gutenberg to certain user roles and post types, you will need to uncheck the ‘ Complete Disable ‘ option.

Unchecking this option will show other options to disable Gutenberg more selectively.

This option is useful if you are using a WordPress plugin but not compatible with Gutenberg.

But instead of turning it off completely, you also want to use Gutenberg for a few other areas on your website.

WordPress is the most popular website builder in the world, accounting for more than 31% of all websites on the internet.

WP has thousands of plugins as well as interfaces, ranging from website sales to community websites.

There are many third-party tools that rely heavily on Editor Classic. The main development team is trying to give developers enough time to make their plugins and themes compatible with Gutenberg.

However, it is very likely that some plugins will not be fully compatible with Gutenberg.

If this is what you are looking for, chances are these will be helpful to you.

Don’t forget to click the save changes button to save your settings.
